What is NST/Bowen therapy?
In the late 1950s, Tom Bowen, an Australian osteopath, discovered that the sacrum, coccyx, cranium, and temporomandibular joint complex and the dural membrane of the spine formed a critically functioning unit in the body. Disruption to this unit resulted in ill health.
By releasing stress at a very deep level, via its calming effect on the Autonomic Nervous System, Bowen sets the scene for the body to heal itself. Unlike many other hands-on therapies, Bowen does not attempt to force change. Rather, through gentle finger and thumb movements it asks the body to recognise and make the changes necessary to bring it back to physiological equilibrium.
Where did NST come from?
Neurostructural Integration Technique is an advanced form of traditional Bowen therapy. It is faster and gentle in its application, and has a higher rate of achieving results, even in complicated cases.
NST's underlying philosophy is that resolving imbalances in your spinal column allows for entire body auto-regulation and rejuvenation. It allows the free movement and assimilation of nutrients into areas of your body previously blocked by tension and congestion. NST is a process that allows your body to regulate itself.
So how is it done?
With primarily fingers and thumbs, the Bowen practitioner makes small, rolling movements over muscles, tendons, ligaments and soft tissue at precise points on the body, using only the amount of pressure appropriate for that area. No hard-tissue manipulation or force is needed or used.
Between each set of moves, the body is allowed to rest for a few minutes, to allow it to absorb the information it has received and initiate the healing process. Each NST session generally lasts 30-60 minutes and is generally pleasant to receive. Many clients become so relaxed they fall asleep during the treatment. As well as a feeling of deep relaxation, many individuals experience a rapid reduction of symptoms (usually within one to four days), an increase in energy, and a strong sense of well-being.
NST simply brings your body back into a state of balance.
